Take a Break in Portland, Oregon


As things quiet down around Lane Community College you may be considering getting out of Eugene for a little while. Instead of packing up your apartment and heading home just yet, take a weekend trip north to Portland! Just a two-hour drive, Portland is the perfect place to head for a fun weekend getaway, and this time of year, there is plenty going on. Check out some of the fun events and holiday activities going on up there this winter break!

The Miracle of a Million Lights

Through December 23 you can visit Victorian Belle, or as it’s known this time of year, The Miracle of a Million Lights! This beautiful home sits on 2.5 acres filled with over one million twinkling lights that turn the historic landmark into a breathtaking wonderland. When you tour the house you will find 10 uniquely decorated trees in rooms with period antiques and heirlooms and enjoy holiday cookies, refreshments, and more. Tours run from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. daily and admission is only $6 per person!

Ugly Sweaters in Stumptown

Downtown Portland is getting dressed up this season as iconic monuments around Pioneer Courthouse Square don ugly sweaters for the holidays! Each Thursday sweaters on the statues will be changed so you can head down in your own ugly sweater to take pictures with the sculptures!

Gnome for the Holidays

Play a game of hide and seek when you try to spot the 35 gnomes hidden in various storefronts on Alberta Street. At each store you can pick up a game card to be punched each time you find another gnome. If you can spot all 35 gnomes while you do your window-shopping you’ll be entered for the chance to win various prizes including, a year’s supply of candy from Candy Babel. Get your walking shoes on and prepare to start searching!

You don’t have to spend much money to find fun all over Portland, Oregon, and this holiday season is no different. Take a weekend trip or just head north for the day to get a change of scenery from Eugene! Either way, you’re sure to have fun this winter break when you head off campus and north to Portland!
